The Cooper-Rand electronic speech prosthesis helps patients who are voiceless due to surgery, paralysis, injury, or who are ventilator dependent return to normal life. It provides support and emergency backup for other choices of communication, including esophageal and tracheo-esophageal puncture.

The Cooper-Rand does not vibrate against throat tissue; does not cause discomfort, or interfere with healing. The electronic larynx introduces sound through a plastic tube placed in the mouth and directed toward the palate. The user then shapes words with the tongue, lips and jaw, as in the normal speech process. Many are able to speak intelligibly with only a few minutes of practice.

Because the Cooper-Rand introduces sound into the mouth, and not through the neck, it can be used simultaneously with a ventilator. It is lightweight and easy to use. Even those with little physical strength, such as patients with polio, A.L.S., M.S., head and neck injuries can use it.

The Cooper-Rand is the only electronic speech prosthesis with practical adaptation for hands-free use or those with little or no use of hands or arms.

The Cooper-Rand has a unique two-piece design, only the 1 oz. Tone Generator is hand-held. The Cooper-Rand is powered by two 9-volt alkaline batteries, which last 4-6 weeks on average. It has easily accessible dial controls for both pitch and volume on the top of the Pulse Generator. It includes a pocket safety clip on the Pulse Generator for security.
