June 24th-June 29th - American Eagle Outfitters - U25 Tour of Pennsylvania

The American Eagle Outfitters Tour of Pennsylvania is a 430 mile, six day, seven stage race, starting in Philadelphia and ending in Pittsburgh. Each stage was very challenging, either requiring the skills to excel at the short and flat, or the long and hilly. With the event’s topography in mind, CRCA/Sakonnet filled their depleted roster with criterium specialist, Adam Branfman, and road race specialist, Sheldon Deeny.

In the opening time trial, Ryan Baumann placed a fine sixth place, while later that evening, Sheldon Deeny also placed sixth in the criterium.

In the first road stage, Ryan infiltrated the break and finished an excellent 3rd place, just behind race winner, Kelly Benefits’ Kevin Lacombe, and Konica Minolta’s Christo Van Heerden.

In the following road stage, Sheldon finished second, narrowly missing the win, to Fiordifrutta’s Jamie Driscoll, with Kelly Benefits’ David Veilleux taking third.

Overall, the team had a successful Tour of Pennsylvania finishing a rider in the top-ten in every stage but one.

July 3rd - 6th - Fitchburg Longsjo Classic (Fitchburg, MA)

CRCA/Sakonnet’s Dylan O’Sullivan and Cheyne Hoag competed at the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, in the Category 2 race. In the road stage, Dylan helped control the field until Cheyne soloed to victory and the yellow jersey on the finishing climb. In the final two stages, Cheyne successfully defended his jersey- and with the win- acquired the remaining points that he needed to upgrade to a category 1 rider. Congratulations, Cheyne!

July 9th - 26th - International Cycling Classic - Superweek (Wisconsin)

With national championships at the beginning of August, CRCA/Sakonnet’s Ryan Baumann, Cheyne Hoag, Travis Burandt, and Adam Alexander decided to head out to the Midwest and compete in the International Cycling Classic Superweek. With multiple top-twenty placings, CRCA/Sakonnet gave notice that they were going to be a force to be reckoned with at the upcoming national championships.

July 26th - CRCA Club Championships (New York, NY)

CRCA/Sakonnet sent their lone, local rider, Adam Alexander, who managed to win the bronze medal behind CRCA/Foundation’s Lisbon Quintero and Joshua Alexander (who is Adam’s younger brother).

July 27th - Norwell Circuit Race (Norwell, MA)

CRCA/Sakonnet’s Nick Keough decided to prepare for the national championships at home instead of traveling with his teammates to the International Cycling Classic Superweek. Nick’s wise decision to forego racing in the Midwest was confirmed with a win at the Norwell Circuit Race, where he outsprinted his four breakaway companions.

August 6th - 10th - USA Cycling U23 Road National Championships (Orange County, CA)

TT podiumThe National Championships first event, a 33km time trial over rolling terrain, saw CRCA/Sakonnet’s Travis Burandt claw his way onto the podium for 5th, finishing only two minutes behind the new national champion, Garmin/Chipotle’s Peter Stetina.

The next event was the criterium, which was held in the stadium parking lot of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Racing without a sprinter, the CRCA/Sakonnet team tried to put a rider into a break, but to no avail. The last three laps were controlled by the powerful Garmin/Chipotle team (for Daniel Holloway), only to see Rock Racing’s Justin Williams narrowly beat Kelly Benefits’ Jacob Keough (SKNTcycling member until turning Pro in June 2008).

RR podiumIn the final event, the road race, CRCA/Sakonnet’s Ryan Baumann made the front group and claimed the last podium spot behind the win (5th), place, and show of Garmin/Chipotle’s Kirk Carlsen, Peter Stetina, and Thomas Peterson.

Cheyne Hoag Interview - Matt Koschara, SKNT U25 G.M.

Matt: First, let me start off with congratulating you on a fine Win last weekend at the 2nd Annual Troutman’s Chevrolet Tour of Millersburg Stage Race.
Does this success take away some of the lingering frustration you still might be feeling over flatting out of the U23 National road race?
Cheyne: No, not really. I went to nationals with great form and to flat out of the road race was really disappointing. It would have been nice to have at least had a wheel change that20was under five minutes so I might have been able to chase back on (chuckles). But I am really psyched with the win.

Cheyne HoagMatt: How did you get into cycling?
Cheyne: My Dad and his brother have always ridden recreationally, so I started to tag along with them.

Matt: And?
Cheyne: I did my first citizen race at thirteen, and my first licensed race at sixteen.

Matt: So you really have only been competing in USA Cycling races for three years? Wow. What sports did you compete in before cycling?
Cheyne: I started playing hockey when I was five- I played that until I ran for my school’s cross country team- which was a lot of fun. My school won sectionals and was second at states in 2003.

Matt: Explosive power and endurance- just the physiology that is required for cycling- nice!
Cheyne: Thanks.

Matt: Tell me a little more about you.
Cheyne: Well, I am studying engineering at Alfred State College.

Matt: How is that going?
Cheyne: It is a lot of work. I have 19 credits.

Matt: (interrupting) - Dude, that’s nuts. How do you find time to train?
Cheyne: I just have to be really disciplined.

Matt: So you don’t really have time for movies, music, etc?
Cheyne: I can make time.

Matt: (interrupting) - What is your favorite movie?
Cheyne: Slapshot.

Matt: Your favorite movie is Slapshot? That’s a great Paul Newman flick.
Cheyne: Yes, it’s very funny, cracks me up every time.

Matt: Last thing, tell me what the high points were for the season.
Cheyne: Racing the U23 World Cup in Canada and the Tour of Pennsylvania.

Matt: (interrupting) – So you love racing?
Cheyne: Yes I do.

Matt: Cool. Thanks for the memories, Cheyne.
