Eastern Collegiate Championships - Durham, NH (May 1st)
Sakonnet's Michael Chauner racing for Bucknell College road away from the competition in last weekends 73 mile Eastern Collegiate Road Championships. His winning ride not only gave Michael a 1st Place in the event but also secured him the Overall Victory in the Division 2 Conference standings. "I decided to try the attack so far out because I felt good and wanted a cushion before the final climb." Chauner said. "I heard the spectators screaming for the others at the bottom of the hill behind me so I knew they were gaining -- the screaming pushed me to dig deep. Fortunately I had enough left to hold them off to the summit. "
Tour de Gila - Silver City, NM (April 27th - May 1st)
Sakonnet's team of 3 participants (Johnny Hayes, Chris Kuhl and Lee Rosenthal) came away with a pair of 6th Place finishes at this year's event. Kuhl started things out by placing highly in the opening Time Trial. Rosenthal then sprinted his way to his top ten in the criterium. Hayes was the glue of the team at this event keeping Kuhl and Rosenthal out of trouble and near the front of the field. At the end of the weekend Kuhl also garnered a 20th Place in the overall G.C.
Bear Mountain Road Race - Bear Mountain, NY (April 30th)
A full Sakonnet Team comprised of Bob/Bruce Weyman, Stephan Badger, Robbie Giannini, Andy Guptill, Peter Horn, Louis Perez and team manager Basil Moutsopoulos lined up for this New York Spring Classic. 98mi on this hilly course is tough enough but throw in heavy rain and strong winds and you've got an epic day ahead. Things started out quietly in the opening laps and as a consequence the Cat 3 field caught the pack. In the ensuing chaos the Pro 1-2 field was neutralized and a small break that had just 1:15 on the group wrongly blew their lead out to 2:40 despite complaints from all Teams not represented in the move. Regardless Sakonnet to matters to hand and moved the entire team to the front of the field. Setting a fierce tempo the 4 Sakonnet boys (minus Peter and Andy who were saving their legs for a top finish) strung out the entire peleton for over an entire lap.
At the base of the climb with 3 laps to go Peter and Andy were left to carry on the effort and they delivered a crushing attack that shattered what was left of the field. In the finish both SKNT men were in a group sprinting for 8th and it was Peter in 9th Place and Andy in 10th Place to close out the day.
