8/20
Elite Criterium Nationals Downers Grove, IL
David Wiswell scored a landmark result for the team by cracking the top 20 in yesterdays Elite Criterium Nationals by sprinting to 18th Place.
In many ways it has been a season of reaching the next level for our 3-year old program at U.S National events since Lee Rosenthal pioneered the way with 6th Place at U23 Criterium Nationals (2005).
This year the team has stepped it up a notch; Caleb scored back to back top 10’s at U23 Nationals RR & Criterium (that’s a first), Johnny Hayes cracked the top 20 at Elite Time Trial Nationals (that’s a first) and now David has followed in their tracks with a top result at Elite Criterium Nationals (that’s a first).
All these hard fought results have earned the program the current ranking of 16th best amateur team in the country. Once David's 27 NRC points from last weekend are added to our total it is possible to for us to be ranked as high as twelfth in the nation with several events to go.
In the event itself David was supported by the still 18 year old Guy East who has had a fantastic debut in the senior ranks. Guy has had a season of steady performances in the big races, where he has been seeking experience more than anything. In fact he has finished all events that he has started minus one where a crash took him out. In this event he was 95th at the end of the day and will be one to watch in the years to come.
For David's part his heads up racing had him in great position going into the last lap but the expected crashes came and an ill timed touch of the brakes lost him 8 places, yet he kept his momentum and put our teams name in the results at this storied event.
8/12 CRCA Club Championships New York, NY
Closer to home the local team was in battle at the CRCA Club Championships in Central Park.
All CRCA events are hard fought but the Club Championships is especially so as the winner is given the #1 number for the entire following season after winning the race. Lining up for SKNT was Mike Margarite, Louis Perez, Russell Kelly, Basil Moutsopoulos, Bob/Bruce Weyman and the ace in the hole Stephan Badger.
Like many times before in a Club race no break-aways were given enough time to succeed and the event came down to a field sprint. In the end big Badger was on the right wheel and had the right position but an unfamiliar finish (behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art) did him in. Sprinting a touch too late netted Badger a fine 4th Place and a quick refresher on Central Park sprints before this weekends G.S Mengoni Grand Prix.
