Avalanche of Results; Stars & Bars Jerseys and 3 More Team Wins

5/13/2007 1st Place: Collegiate Nationals - Team Overall Lawrence, KS

Devin Flaherty and his Stanford teammates WON the Division 1 Team Overall competition at Collegiate Nationals. A strong performance by both the men’s and women’s riders combined for 435 points. Chris Kuhl's Fort Lewis College team earned 343 points for a strong Third. Phil Gaimon and David Guttenplan's University of Florida team finished in 6th Place overall with 253 points.

5/13/2007 4th Place: Bear Mountain Classic Harriman State Park, NY

Gavi Epstein used his fine form from the Tour of Virginia and came very close to soloing for the victory in this Hors Category regional event. Gavi was supported by Stephan Badger and Bob/Bruce Weyman and with their assistance Epstein was fresh enough for a solo bridge up to a three man break away on the third lap. Going into the finally the breakaway had ballooned to 10 riders and Epstein launched a dangerous flyer that had him soloing with a tenuous gap of just 15 seconds with 2 miles to go. In the end he was brought back but sprinted on instinct and raced to a fantastic 4th place result.

5/12/2007 1st Place: Collegiate Nationals - Team Time Trial Lawrence, KS

Team Captain, Chris Kuhl, along with his collegiate teammates from Fort Lewis College repeated their Collegiate National Championship of last year with another victory in the Team Time Trial event. Fort Lewis College riding Jamis Trilogy TT bikes specialize in the team time trial and Chris is the anchor of the program for the Sky Hawks. The four man FLC team won by 13 seconds over in state arch rivals CU of Boulder and 14 seconds over third place CSU.

Phil Gaimon and David Guttenplan's University of Florida team finished in 7th Place.

5/12/2007 9th Place: MRC Sterling Classic Road Race Sterling, MA

Rob Giannini continued his strong string of Northeastern results with a strong sprint on this uphill finish. Racing against the full Nerac.com Pro Cycling Team the amateurs had their work cut out for them but Robbie again showed his class with a top finish.

5/12/2007 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar event 17th Place: Joe Martin Stage Race - Stage 2 Fayetteville, AK

Guy East bounced back from bad allergies at the Tour of Virginia to score a Top Twenty placing in an NRC road race. Guy’s early form from March where he gained NRC points for the team has escaped him due to a bought with bad allergies over the last 6 weeks. The 19 year old East is a resilient rider however and this fine finish is the corner he’s been waiting to turn.

5/6/2007 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar event 22nd Place: South East Crit Series - Decatur Downtown Criterium Decatur, GA

After back to back to back events most athletes see a dip in results but in tonight’s event that was not the case for David Guttenplan. Known as some what of criterium specialist David thrives on the adrenalin of fast hard and dangerous criteriums. Tonight event was no different and in the end David crowned a fine weekend of racing with another Top 25 result.

5/5/2007 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar event 10th Place: South East Crit Series - Sunny King Criterium Greenwood, SC

After last nights ride David Guttenplan road the crest at the front of the peleton in today’s Greenwood, South Carolina race. Guttenplan’s fast finish in tough races served him well as he cracked the top ten for the first time this year in an NRC event. David’s early season results in California where a sign of things to come and today’s result is just the tip of the iceberg.

5/5/2007 7th Place: Jiminey Peak Road Race Hancock, MA

Robbie Giannini scored an important Top Ten result in one of the most highly anticipated Northeastern events of the spring season. Racing on his own and with an eye on sharpening his fitness prior to the Tour of Virginia Robbie sprinted his way into a top placing against a deep field of 134 riders.

5/4/2007 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar event 16th Place: South East Crit Series - Smith Barney Classic Spartanburg, SC

After two warm up events the previous weekend at the Athens Twilight and the Roswell Criterium David Guttenplan was ready to crack the top 25 at a SE Criterium event. His number was called tonight in Spartanburg South Carolina where David exhibited his heads up racing skills avoiding multiple last lap crashes to gain a top result.

4/24-29/2007 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar event Tour of Virginia Natural Bridge, VA Click for related Photos

Twenty nine teams and 180 riders contested the Tour of Virginia from Tuesday, April 24th thru Sunday, April 29th. The event was made up of a opening individual time trial, along with 2 criteriums, and 4 road races through out the course of the week. Racing for the Sakonnet team was Gavi Epstein, Phil Gaimon, Chris Kuhl, Andy Cornelison, Robbie Giannini and Guy East. Providing support for the team was General Manager Basil Moutsopoulos, Director Sportif Matt Koschara and local masseur Ernie.

There where many ups and downs over the course of the week. The highlights of the event were the strong stage finishes of Gavi Esptein and the strong support provided to him by his teammates. A recap of the teams top results:

4/19/2007 1st Place: Waterworks Circuit Race Des Moines, IA

Andy Cornelison tuned up his fitness before the Tour of Virginia by winning a field sprint at the local Thursday night race in Des Moines.

4/17/2007 1st Place: Augusta Tuesday Night Race Series Augusta, NJ

Gavi Epstein tuned up his fitness before the Tour of Virginia by forcing a break away and then handling wining a two up sprint in western New Jersey.

4/16/2007 1st Place: Speedway Time Trial Series Indianapolis, IN

Guy East tuned up his fitness before the Tour of Virginia by crushing the local 10 mile time trial series with a wining time of 21 minutes flat.

4/16/2007 1st Place: NAMA Points Challenge Championships

Gavi Epstein was presented with the 2006 NAMA Points Challenge Championships by race organizers after the Battenkill-Roubaix race. NAMA is a Junior and U23 ranking system for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states that tracks eligible riders for an entire season. Gavi won the Men’s 19 – 22 division with 55 total points.
