A soaring Sakonnet team of Guy East, Johnny Hayes, Phil Gaimon, David Guttenplan, Chris Kuhl, Andy Cornelison and Australian guest rider Matt Sherwin arrived in Massachusetts for the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic ready to rumble. It wasn’t long before the team made their presence known as no less than three team riders cracked the top 25 in the individual time trail. The team was lead by 20 year old Guy East who is just coming back to his March form after a severe bought of allergies that had plagued him for several months. “I felt good and my Jamis Trilogy felt super fast”, said East of his ride.
In stage two another three SKNT riders cracked the top 25 and this time East came within a tires width of winning the stage from Alejandro Borrajo (Rite Aid). “It was a fast hard stage but in the end it came down to a field sprint. Guy and David where dropped off at the front by Johnny Hayes and they both finished top 10”, commented Director Sportif Matt Koschara.
After stage two Guy East held 6th in the overall General Classification but stage three, the dreaded Wachusett Mountain Road Race, unraveled the team. Although both East and Hayes had top 20 rides East dropped to 11th overall.
In the final stage the team road for the win and from the beginning Phil Gaimon was off the front of the field in a dangerous three man break away. It wasn’t until five laps to go that the move was brought back and the peleton prepared for a field sprint where David Guttenplan kept the teams string of top twenty placings intact with his 15th Place finish. “I’m really proud of this group, they road brilliantly and were one of the top teams at the event” commented Koschara.
6/30/2007 Rocky Hill Cycling Classic Rocky Hill, NJ
3rd Place: Gavi Epstein
In Gavi’s own words – Editor
“This was a 75 mile road race. 7 laps of a little more than 10 miles, with a little climb almost a mile long, steep at the bottom level and then kicks up again at the top. The climb ended about 1.5 miles from the finish. The race started pretty fast with lots of people wanting to go early it seemed. There were a lot of full amateur teams at the race. On the second lap a breakaway of 5 riders had formed. John Durso, John Erdelyi (former US U23 National RR Champion), an Ex-Saturn Junior rider, Jared Bunde (Mengoni) and a rider from Rockville-Harley Davidson.
Each time up the climb everyone would follow every move that went on the climb, since it seemed like the most obvious place to attack, I tried going on the 2nd time up to bridge up to the break, but I couldn't get away. So I sat in the next lap. The third time up I sat near the front going up and as we rounded the corner at the top, I didn't even attack, but just put it in a hard gear and went and I guess everyone just sat up as someone had previously attacked on the climb and everyone was chasing hard until then. Only one rider from Rite Aid, Clayton Barrows, came with me. By now the break of 5 were way out of site with about a minute and a half gap. Clayton and I worked well and we soon caught a solo rider, I believe Taylor Brown on PA Lightning. He was only good for about 2 or 3 pulls and I guess he got dropped. So Clayton and I kept going. It took us almost a whole lap to make it up to the break. We caught on just as we crested the climb for the 4th time.
Once we reached the break, the gap then went up to almost 3 minutes. It was pretty straight forward, do what you have to do to stay away but not more than anyone else. At the end of the 6th lap (2nd to last time up the climb), I noticed a few guys dangling off the back, Bunde and Durso, who are both really good sprinters. I figured I would lift the pace up the climb to see what would happen. They both got dropped, but only Durso could catch back on the decent. We were down to 6. I knew I wanted to get away. So last time up the climb, I put in a super hard attack and only Erdelyi could follow. We had a gap and as we were about to crest the hill I needed to rest just a little so I look to Erdelyi and he tells me, "I can win the sprint from the group so I don't need to work to stay away." I was so furious at him. Only two other riders were able to make it up to us. Clayton from Rite Aid and the Rockville Rider. I gave it one last attack but I couldn't get enough speed to get away from them, especially going down a non-technical decent. So I swung off hard and went to the back of the group and decided to watch what would happen.
With about 250m (in an uphill sprint) Erdelyi jumped first and really hard. I quickly jumped and was able to get on Clayton's wheel (a big boy, good draft). Rockville then pulled in front as Erdelyi started to fade. I then started coming up on Clayton but just didn't have the power to come through. Rockville took it with Clayton second and I threw my bike about an inch in front of Erdelyi to take third. Looking back, maybe I should have just dragged Erdelyi to the line and had a guaranteed 2nd. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.”
6/24/2007 Cox Charities Cycling Classic Providence, RI ![]()
12th Place: David Guttenplan
The Cox Charity Classic Criterium has all the makings of a future NRC event. The race features a fantastic spectator friendly course in downtown Providence along with a stellar purse of $15K which attracts top level riders. Sakonnet riders Gavi Epstein and Guy East road aggressively and made the decisive breakaway of the day. The move looked like it would make it to the end however a resurgent Mark McCormack (CLIFF) went to the front of the peleton with five laps to go and drilled it until the breakaway was within sight. At that point the race was sure to become a field sprint and it was David Guttenplan who cashed in for the team with his top twenty finish behind winner Alejandro Borajo (Rite Aid).

Saturn Rochester Twilight Criterium Rochester, NY
19th Place: Guy East
20th Place: Johnny Hayes
A beautiful night, a large crowd estimated at 30 thousand people and U.S. style criterium bike racing is a combination made in heaven. The Rochester Twilight Criterium which is part of the USA Pro Tour of events was one of the most thrilling events to date in the season. For the Sakonnet boys it was a near miss at a high profile result as Guy East who was in the first incarnation of the breakaway of the day just narrowly missed clamping on to the final selection. “I was up there, I was in the break but we slowed and then Canadian national champion Dominic Rollin (KodakGallery.com/Sierra Nevada) just gassed it down the left side and I hesitated. Hilton Clarke (Navigators) drilled it and brought the four others and I was left hanging out to dry” lamented East. In the end East and Johnny Hayes made the best of the situation as they sprinted into the top 20 and into the big money pursue. “They all road incredibly. This was a big time race. Guy, Johnny and Gavi all gutted it out. I think this is a sign of future greatness” commented Director Sportif Matt Koschara.
6/22/2007 UCI Fastest Man on Wheels Trexletown, PA
1st Place: Madison Race: Guy East
6th Place: Points Race: Guy East
In Guy’s own words – Editor
"The night before Rochester I lined up for a UCI Points Race and Madison in T-town. The Points Race had 4 place points sprints every 6 laps and lapping the field earns you 20 points, the person with the most points at the end of the race wins. Early in the Points Race I went a lap up with Colby Pearce, Alejandro Borrajo (Rite Aid), Peter Dawson and 2 other riders, it was an extremely hard race and I was only able to get a couple points in the sprints yet I ended up 6th place with 22 points."
“The last event of the evening was the UCI 20km Madison with 4 point sprints. I was paired up with Zach Bell from Canada. We went up against 12 teams including Olympic hopefuls Colby Pearce/Bobby Lea (Toyota United) and Alejandro Borrajo (Rite Aid)/Guido Palma. Within the first couple laps my partner attacked in order to catch the other teams off guard and go up a lap. We were working hard lap after lap but were not able to hold off the field, however we were able to stay out to earn the first point sprint. All through the race we were working well together and we were always in the top 3 in the point sprints. We ended up winning the race with 15 points and gaining valuable UCI points.
